Sustainability update: EPD certificate with excellent results for ECONYL® tiles

As part of our sustainability strategy under the umbrella label ‘Twise’, we are committed to understanding the impact of our carpets on the environment, and to keep their impact as low as possible. We are proud to announce the excellent results of our brand-new Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certificate for the ECONYL® tile collections. Read all about it.

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certificates are documents containing information about the environmental impact of a specific product or material. They are based on the product’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

“How does a product perform during the different phases of its life cycle?”

That is the central question answered in the Environmental Product Declaration. The contents of an EPD depend on the product category, in this case floor coverings. The format of an EPD is always the same for each product category, which makes it easy to compare different floor coverings.

The conditions and standards for obtaining an EPD certificate are very strict. The certificates were established by the government in 2014 . Tapibel currently has a strong EPD certificate for the ECONYL ® floor tiles in its range.

The excellent results of the EPD certification are confirmation of Tapibel’s good work when it comes to sustainability. It solidifies our ecological promise and initiatives, and it creates trust. The certificate makes it easy to see (in figures) how durable ECONYL® carpet tiles are throughout their entire life cycle. Their environmental impact was calculated:

• Production phase: the production process of the regenerable ECONYL® yarn was investigated.
• Construction phase: the production process of the tiles themselves was examined. Our sustainable labels Ecofuse (the latex-free coating with PVB) and Greenbase (the bitumen backing with 70% recycled material) were taken into account.
• User phase: the environmental impact of the items during this phase was examined: the transportation of the tiles to the customer, the installation of the carpet tiles, the use of the floor covering, and the maintenance.
• Reworking phase: the research agency looked at the environmental impact of different scenarios for processing the carpet after use.

The result? The environmental impact of the tufted ECONYL® tile collections falls well within the proposed standards. Tapibel obtained an EPD certification to be proud of thanks to the excellent results from the LCA study.
